Maybe it's just how the high school curriculum is, but the Greek, Roman, Babylonian, Persian... empires were all in the similar area. Why?
This is mostly because the traditional path of "Western Civ" has its roots in the Mediterranean-Mesopotamia area. One could just as easily talk about the empires in India, China, or South America.
