In ancient times (candles and fat), a days work got you 10 minutes of light.
In pre-modern times (kerosene), a days work got you 5 hours of light.
In modern times (electricity and incandescents), a days work gets you 20,000 hours of light.
Based on this episode, i assume initially incandescent was more expensive, but quickly became more economical than kerosone as technology progressed and infrastructure improved. Light has gotten amazingly cheap over time. With LED bulbs becoming more common its getting even cheaper!
