What do academic historians think of Pierre Berton's work?

Pierre Berton has written a lot of popular history books on Canada. How is the work regarded by academic historians?

Back in 2006, the Alaska Historical Society published The Alaska 67: A Guide to Alaska's best history books. It's out of print now, but I've a copy.

No. 1 on the list of 67 books, as voted by Alaska historians, members of the historical society and the general public is Pierre Berton's The Klondike Fever: The Life and Death of the Last Great Gold Rush.

That it was voted the best Alaska history book, some 50 years after its publication, should say quite a bit about the regard in which it is held.
