Why was so much representative European medieval art technically incorrect?

by cyanocobalamin

I've been seeing a lot of medieval art that was meant to be realistic, but is technically incorrect. Faces out of proportion, poorly drawn, like something a child would do.

Was this a style or was it matter of cameras not being invented and only so many talented renderer artists to go around?

hi! it might be helpful to the art historians here if you could link a couple of examples that they can address directly; meanwhile, there is an archive of related posts in the FAQ that may be helpful (posts are in roughly chronological order, but responses discussing medieval artworks may be scattered throughout)
