Before WWI, there was a naval race in which Britain and Germany tried to build up bigger navies. During the Cold War, the U.S. and USSR had a nuclear arms race, where they both tried to build up bigger nuclear arsenals. Is there a current race in military tech similar to those two?

This isn't probably a good fit for this sub due to the 20 year rule.

But to the actual question I would look to the South China Sea, especially the growing race to modernize in places like Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and The Philippines. All while China hangs over them with Japan, the US, and the Korea's in the background.
