According to the US census the median income was a little over 4,400 dollars annually in 1955 and a little over 3,300 in 1950. Using this CPI calculator for comparing what 10 cents in 1950 would buy in 2014 gives 98 cents which is pretty reasonable for the price of a hamburger. 10 cents in 1955 would buy 88 cents of goods today.
