I'm very interested in history, though not a historian myself. I've browsed the book list in the sidebar, ordered a few books (started reading on the HRE right now), but I'm also very interested in viewing some solid documentaries. It doesn't really matter what part of history, ot what region, although my focus currently is mostly European history (I'm kinda working my way back from WWII, to WWI, and what led to that, etcetera..). I've started watching this documentary on the Korean War (I know, that's not Europe, but the Cold War also fascinates me greatly): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIobfyaiAUU
So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
WW1 I'd suggest looking into The Great War channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUcyEsEjhPEDf69RRVhRh4A
They upload a video every week and discuss what happened 100 years ago, this week. Really well made, I'm really enjoying this series.
WW2 I'd recommend The World at War. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071075/ One of the really nice things that this series has that others dont is first hand accounts from people who actually fought in the war.
Rome You didn't mention anything about ancient history, but figured it wouldn't hurt to mention something about Rome as well. This series is ok (not the best, but it covers Rome from the early republic period until the last emperor. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUaxo-22KsGN6m3xR6H3pAV9ob4tDRgCn
I always really enjoyed Melvin Bragg's The Adventure of English. I think the whole series is there. It's about the transformation of English from an insignificant German dialect to the global language we have today.
The Death of Yugoslavia is a very well made doc on more recent events, it blurs the lines between History and contemporary reportage. Fascinating stuff http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bzvNZz-X-50 ep1 of six for you there.
On the use of History and memory in politics I recommend Adam Curtis' The Living Dead. He makes bold and contentious claims but it is good fodder for thought http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4xoM6-1SWl4. Ep1 of three there.
The entire series as a whole, Crash Course History. They do many different topics, and are now in their second season of doing more in depth analysis. It's also hosted by John Green, I didn't even know he was an author when I started watching it, I just liked his presentation.
BBC's Battlefield series is excellent! All episodes can be found in YouTube.
This is a series of videos about the Punic Wars of Rome and Carthage. Presented in a unique way, I found it very enjoyable and informative. http://youtu.be/EbBHk_zLTmY
The Secrets of the Viking Sword is a very good documentary on some pattern welded Viking sword - it combines many facets of Viking age sword-related stuff.
As far as WWII goes Victory at Sea is an excellent TV series documenting the war in the Pacific. I think?....
