Hi there, I've been looking everywhere for the past few weeks for a reliable book that deals with Japans' History. I've found The Making of Modern Japan, but that only talks about post 1600 Japan. The Book list here doesn't mention much more. I can't afford the Cambridge collection, and most of it and the other books feel somewhat outdated.

What kind of pre-1600 culture/area are you trying to find? Just in general, or would you like a bunch of specific-er books?
I also found "A Concise History of Japan (Cambridge Concise Histories)" that is going to get released in 2015, but I'm not sure its what I would want.
