I think the work that the mods put in on this subreddit to ensure quality is incredible. It would be interesting to know a rough estimate; or a percentage, of comments that are removed to ensure this amazing quality is ensured.
Just by looking at the past 24 hours (ie this is not a reliable statistical study by any means), it appears we have removed 247 comments and banned 8 people. The 24 hours before that, we removed 350 comments and banned 3 people.
So, there's a snapshot of the daily onslaught!
On that note what the hell is your day job and how can you can sit around and read every goddamn post in here?

I've been wondering this for a while- how often do the mods have to remove holocaust deniers?

Can we start a subreddit called like "/r/deletedfromaskhistorians" or something like that where people post especially terrible/hilarious/terriblarious comments that get deleted by mods? Mods could either submit them, or users could before they get deleted (let's be honest, I think most askhistorians regulars can tell when a comment is going to be deleted...). Keep it all anonymous, it's not about blaming people for being idiots, I just want to see the stupid shit that people post in this sub while I'm sleeping. That's like eight whole hours of racist trolls I'm missing out on EVERY DAY, people.
Seriously though I really appreciate the moderation team of this sub. Every time I post a top level comment and it doesn't get deleted, I feel like I've just won the nobel prize in history.
To the mods, in your answer please cite relevant academic sources. Anecdotal evidence is of little value.

You know, I'm not overly interested in history and wouldn't normally follow this sub but the mods do such a good job on promoting quality content that it's one of if not my favorite sub to read.
I look at this sub a lot, and rarely if ever post (my field of expertise never gets asked about :s) I can't say that for all the other subs I happily spam away on haha

Depends on how many questions there are dealing with American foreign policy or the holocaust.

I'm sorry for the off topic, but since many mods appear to be here I have a (sort of related) question.
I really enjoy reading this subreddit, I enjoyed even more helping people answering questions. But one day I got banned because of an "offensive username". This hasn't happened in any other subreddit that I'm active in, so I wonder does the usernames' name really matter? I mean, I don't see "blacksnow" as a offensive name, nor have I ever been offended by anybody else's username.
I would really like to help people out on this subreddit again, but it sort of annoys me that you may be doing your job too good and are too strict with some rules. It's just my opinion, I hope you understand.
