Were legal documents written in Hawaiian formatted in a manner common people could understand, or were they written in what we would consider "legalese?"

When I lived in Hawaii I worked with a lot of public records. I saw a few land deeds that were written in native Hawaiian and I was wondering if a random Hawaiian speaker would be able to understand these documents, or if it was written in a more specialized manner like our legal documents are now.
