I'm old enough (77) to remember. Japan surrendered. The celebrations were huge and noisy. Everyone said, "Now our boys won't have to fight--or die--anymore." All the ships in the world, it seemed, sailed into Tokyo harbor and Japanese ministers signed the surrender documents Gen. Douglas MacArthur presented them with and American troops surged into Japan and took over, with zero opposition as I recall.
