I'm rewatching the Second Season of Mad Men and one of the characters told her daughter "do you remember what happened to the girl in Gone With the Wind?" Since I know that the movie came out in 1941, how would a child (roughly eight) have a chance to see it?
The film version of Gone With the Wind premiered late 1939, was in limited release throughout 1940, then entered wide-spread general release in 1941.
But MGM rereleased the film in theaters in 1947, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1967, 1971, 1974, 1989, 1998, and again in 2013 (UK only), and 2014 (75 anniversary).
So it is entirely possible for children in the 1960s to have seen any of the number re-screenings throughout the 50s and 60s. Of course, Margaret Mitchell's original book would have also been available.
