In the early Church, the Nativity of Christ was celebrated together with the feast of Theophany on Jan 6. At some point in the 4th century a separate Nativity feast was established, set at Dec 25. For several more centuries Theophany was still the major winter holy day, but Christmas gradually grew in importance, surpassing Theophany in prominence sometime during the middle ages.
