Let me give you some insight from my own research and records that I keep. Here's an excerpt from the Dec. 25, 1914 issue of the Daily Alaska Dispatch, one of two daily newspapers operating in Juneau, Alaska at that date:

"Christmas will be observed in a fitting manner by every person on Gastineau channel, whether employer or employed.

The stores will close and the big mining companies will shut down their works for one of the two holidays of the year. ...

The Juneau stores will observe the day and close.

The owners of the Juneau stores will follow their usual custom and remember each of the clerks and other employes in a substantial manner. ...

In Douglas the business men have decided to take a real holiday and closed last night at ten, to stay closed until Monday morning. This will allow the help and the owner to take a well earned rest and will prepare them for the annual stock taking which will start at once. ..."
