What is the first recorded recipe? Cookbook?

by k9catforce

I was eating my holiday dinner and began thinking about the history of cooking. Noticed a cookbook on the counter and it got me thinking. What is the earliest recorded food recipe? And in a similar vein, what is the earliest written cookbook?

The oldest one with which I am familiar is an ancient Roman cookbook from the 4th century AD by a guy named Apicius. You can find it on Gutenberg.org. Some of the recipes are a little hard to figure out since it's not always clear what he is referring to and how the various ingredient measurements are to sized. I would suspect that there might be older recipes from China but I don't know much about that part of the world.

Good luck. If you try one, let me know how it turns out!
