Why did the English names for the days of the week retain their pagan origins?

by ILikeButtsicles

We have Tuesday through Friday, named after Norse gods and Saturday, named after Saturn.

Given the strong Christian presence over the history of English speaking nations, why have the days retained their pagan names? On that note, why did Saturday retain its Roman name while the others retained their Germanic influence?
