At the start of the second volume of Hans Delbrueck's History of the Art of War, he gives the cost of all sorts of war gear in solidi and in cows in the Merovingian period. You can then figure the weight of a gold solidus and figure that in today's gold, or figure a comparable cost for modern cows. I'd do both and split the difference.
