What's a good book/article/read regarding food throught history?

by montsegur87

I've checked the FAQ and there's no question like this one.

I'm from SA and I constantly hear that many products that are common in every day's meals were from this continent (e.g: tomato, coffe beans). I'd like to read about these exchanges between different cultures

Thank you

One I enjoy is "Food, an Oxford Anthology". It it a collection of small sections of various plays, letters, poems, etc., that mention food in some way. For example, in the section on lunch, one section is a diary entry from Nathaniel Hawthorne about what he ate for lunch while on board a ship. Though, it's organized by type of food, type of meal, or location, not chronologically.

You may want to check out "A History of the World in Six Glasses," which looks at the history of some of the most ancient and popular drinks and the way they were used within different cultures: http://www.amazon.com/A-History-World-6-Glasses/dp/0802715524
