I am writing a novel set in London in 1979 in which several characters are heavy smokers. I have found it quite difficult to find information about smoking in this era, especially as I don't smoke myself, and don't know anyone who lived through this era who did smoke at that time. Some of the things I need answered are:

1. Was it more common to buy pre-fabricated cigarettes or to roll your own? (And was there a difference between how rich people and not-so-rich people did their smoking?)

2. How was loose tobacco for rolling sold? Did it most commonly come in tins, cardboard boxes or plastic bags like you see these days?

3. What were the most popular brands at this time?

4. How much did tobacco (in its various forms) cost. (Would be most helpful if you could give me the price of the day, rather than the equivalent cost in today's value).

5. How did pre-rolled cigarettes differ from the ones we have today?

6. How did 'self-rolled' cigarettes differ from today? (Did people use filters in 1979? Were the papers different? Etc.)

7. Any additional information and details about cannabis smoking in this era would also be appreciated. (Was it more common to roll joints, or to use bongs/pipes/other paraphernalia etc.)

Sorry if I'm asking for a lot of info, I just wanted to avoid having to make multiple posts. Any answers at all will be very helpful to me as I know next to nothing about this subject and would like to be able to include accurate details in my work.
