I've asked quite a few people about this, most think it's from a rifle but no one has been able to tell me a make or model.

Yep, that's a rifle bolt.

Remington Model 41. Manufactured in 1936. Not worth that much. The rifle itself was a single shot bolt action .22, and you had to cock it yourself after closing the bolt. It probably put squirrels on your family's table though, so I'd say treasure it.
