What did Palestine have to do with WWI?

In what way?

The simplest answer is it was part of the Ottoman Empire (one of the Central Powers). And as it bordered territory that was under British control, it became a relatively easy location for the British to attack the Turks. Eventually a coalition of Arabs and British forces took Palestine and the Levant from the Turks.

After the war it became part of a British managed League of Nations mandate. And this was something a number of both Jewish and Arab groups opposed. Both of them thought that they had been promised the territory. It was an important step on the roads to an Israeli state, Jewish-Muslim antagonism, and well pretty much everything else in the Middle East gel-political world.
