Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands was a former British colony at the time of WW2 so a variety of pidgin English is spoken and English is the official language. From my reading, the natives were generally supportive of the Allied forces operating in the area. Some were equipped by the allies as 'coast watchers'. They would use watch for Japanese ship and airplane movements and report via radio to allied forces. I would recommend the book "The Coast watchers" by Eric Feldt. "

Edit: Many Coastwatchers were Allied forces or even civilians, though there were also several natives. The Solomon Islanders were frequently used in support roles as well, scouting, etc.

There is also the well known case of JFK being rescued by natives when his boat was wrecked.

I lived in Honiara on Guadalcanal in the late 1980s, so this is an area of interest to me.
