I'm doing research for my low-fantasy novel at the moment. It's set in a roughly bronze/iron age culture (at best), though parts of the world are more stone age. My protagonists are having to find their way from one town to another, through difficult territory. This is something which I've rarely found described in fantasy books, it just seems to happen; it's taken for granted that someone knows how to get to somewhere and what skills to use.
But how? I've never really seen Gandalf get out a compass or map, and in my invented society I'm not sure anyone would have them.
So, for long treks, how could you navigate (on land--is there a term for this?) well?
At night you can use the north star as a fixed point. That would show you north at night.
At day you know where east-west are because of the sun.
If you need "hero things" then an ancient magnet that helps showing north-south. Those things existed, and occurred in mountainous areas.
Maybe a story pasted down from folklore...
