After reading Manchester's biography, it seems the biggest reason was simply the Victorian idea that India was somehow "earned" by the British empire and he wasn't about to give it up. More realistically Churchill mentions that the British are the only thing keeping the Hindus and Muslims at peace. He also thought that the British were ethnically superior and were doing a favor to the the Indians by ruling them.
