I've read a lot about the battle of Berlin right before Germany's surrender, but I'd like to know what other territory they controlled at the time of their surrender, and what assets they had to defend it.
There was a concept by the Nazi's of a national redoubt in the Austrian alps. The Nazi's had gathered resources here to hold on for as long as possible. In the end however this turned out to be more of a propaganda stunt and when the allies advanced in this region there was little real resistance. If the concept had been more endorsed by Hitler then it could have been a serious thorn in the side of the allies.
Besides that there were also the Atlantic pockets; important harbours in France that were bypassed during the allied advance. The Germans held onto these ports to make allied resupply more difficult and some lasted till the last days of the war. At the time of the capitulation the Nazi's still occupied the Channel Islands, St. Nazaire, Dunkirk and Lorient.
