According to dictionary.com, the word itself stems from Old English and German, so my question is, what did we call it before English and German came to be?
"The Earth" is merely the modern English language term for our planet. People who speak other languages do not call it "Earth." For example, in French it is "la Terre," Italian has "La Terra," and German calls it "Die Erde."
What it was called in the past would be entirely dependent on what language a person spoke, just as is what it's called today.
hi! as keplar notes, "Earth" is an English word, so what "we" called it before that is going to depend on which culture you're referring to. There have been other posts asking about the name of the planet, so check these out to will find many examples in other languages, some contemporary, some ancient.
Thank you guys for the answers! I figured it was something like this, but I wanted to be sure. Sorry I didn't search the reddit before posting. I was on my phone and didn't have a lot of time to figure it out.
