The families of base personnel was evacuated while the perimeter's defences were strengthened against the possibility of attack much as the base was so far from the missile sites and an invasion from Florida quicker the base played little to no part in the invasion build up.

However unknown to the Americans until after 1991 was that the Russians/Cubans had a FROGs short range missile armed with a nuclear warhead aimed at the base and the likely invasion beaches.
