I was about to answer your question to say that most hunter-gatherer societies were in fact quasi-communist societies, and that inequality only arose once agricultural societies started producing surpluses. This seems to be, however, a myth that was perpetrated by the likes of Karl Marx, and continues to be to this day by communist movements, but has been debunked by many anthropologists.
