Where can I learn more about the English post-WWI/pre-WWII era depicted in "Peaky Blinders"?

by opineapple

The series creator mentioned in an interview that it was a little studied time period (he said that, unlike Americans, the English were better at mythologizing upper middle class rather than working class people). The creator himself had first heard about it through his own family history.

Does anyone know of good reading material for learning about the historical context of the show, as well as the history of the Peaky Blinders themselves?

If any 20th-century-European historians on this sub have been following the show, I'd love to know your thoughts on it!

Can't say I've read it, but I've seen Phillip Gooderson's "The Gangs of Birmingham" cited a few times in articles and publications I've read...

There are some good books on the period in general.

Martin Pugh, We danced all night : a social history of Britain between the wars

Roy Hattersley, Borrowed Time: the story of Britain between the wars is a readable popular history.

George Orwell, The road to Wigan Pier is a classic polemic against poverty in the North of England.
