There isn't one single thing which can be pointed to as the cause of the Vietnam War. If you want to simplify as much as possible, you might say it was the general trend towards decolonization meeting the Cold War.

Are you talking about the American involvement in Vietnam or are you talking about the Indochina war that proceeded it?
