Since matches were invented in the 1820s, what quick, portable method of fire starting did, for example, George Washington's army use to light their cannon fuses during the American Revolution?
Most commonly they would use a match cord which was a length of cord treated with various substances to make it stay lit and burn extremely slowly. For cannons the match cord would be mounted on the end of a linstock and touched to the touch hole to ignite the powder.
