I'm currently reading the Bully Pulpit, by Doris Kearns Goodwin. In it she mentions the strain the Civil War placed on the marriage of Theodore Roosevelt's parents, Theodore Sr. (northerner) and Mittie Bullock (southerner). It got me thinking that there had to have been many such marriages. Are there accounts of other notable examples, or an otherwise general treatment of the effect of the Civil War on marriages between Northerners and Southerners?
Another example you might look at was General George Thomas, who despite being from Virginia, and a prewar subordinate of Lee, and being a close friend with Bragg. When he remained loyal his family disowned him, and after the war even refused money he sent to try to help them rebuild.
He was one of the principle commanders through the entire war in the West, and one of the best logistical and defensive minds(if overly methodical at times) in either army.
