Why does the term "anti-Semitic" pertain to Jews if a Semite refers to persons of southwestern Asian ancestry?

by UnknownReference

Anti-Semitic seems to be a misnomer, any history behind this term is greatly appreciated.

The use of "anti-Semitic" and "anti-Semitism" in this sense actually originated in 1873 and 1881, respectively, with the German journalist Wilhelm Marr, who himself hated Jews. The word "anti-Semitic" (antisemitisch) had previously been used by a Jewish Austrian writer, Moritz Steinschneider, in 1860, but in a somewhat broader sense; Steinschneider was attacking the ideas of the French philosopher Ernest Renan, who believed in the inferiority of "Semitic races" in general. Marr used the word "anti-Semitism" (antisemitismus), even though he was only referring to Jews, because it sounded more scientific than "Jew-hatred" (Judenhass).
