Frida Khalo wore a unibrow and light moustache; how would her contemporaries have viewed this style?

Western standards for female grooming have changed a lot over the past century so I'm curious if her hair choices have always attracted so much attention. Either way I think she's great!

Edit: We're all idiots, Kahlo not Khalo...fixing where I can.

Frida Khalo's facial hair was absolutely a statement and one that brought her ridicule. It was not laziness, in fact she darkened parts of her eyebrows with makeup to emphasize the shape. She also embraced her sexuality as evidenced in several of her paintings and photographs of her, and she is quoted as saying she loves her eyebrows. For her embracing her facial hair was a part of the larger act of rejecting European ideals of beauty, she also favored more traditional clothing over what was in vogue at the time.

And frankly there were bolder things about her for which she was unapologetic; she was a devout communist, she occasionally dressed in drag, she had female lovers, she spoke and painted about taboo subjects like miscarriage. She was an all-around controversial figure at her time, it didn't stop at her hair.
