How were mechanical time devices in the ancient world and Renaissance powered? On the more elaborate clocks, how were noises (trumpet imitations) produced?

by EasySchmitty

Just to elaborate, what powered the cogs and mechanisms to keep the clocks ticking?

With regards to the sounds produced, I don't specifically mean bells, but music or imitation instruments being played. [For example in this youtube video, the blaring noise heard is supposed to imitate the watchman's horn.] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8buj0U-MdJM)

I've also read about mechanical animals in the Byzantine court, where mechanized lions operated and birds tweeted. Do we know how this was accomplished?

hi! While it's possible this question will get answers here, the mechanics of clockworks is more a question for clock-/watchmakers & jewelers. Do consider x-posting to /r/Clocks and/or /r/Watches
