Apparently there was an English fleet involved in the First Crusade. Who were they and what were they doing in the Mediterranean?

I've just been reading "All the countries we've ever invaded" and at one point it mentions an English fleet that assisted the Crusaders.

How did a fleet of Anglo-Saxons come to be there? Were they Varangians or exiles?

Does this have a citation? Also, are you sure it's referring to Anglo-Saxons and not Normans/the Norman contingent from England?
