Was North Korea ever actually communist? If not, where did the idea it was come from?

If a country does not describe themselves as communist, it does not automatically make it true. Remember that the USSR also described itself as a 'democratic' state.

Just don't fall into the 'No True Scotsman' fallacy involving communist, stalinist etc type countries.

Here's the wiki on it. Interestingly, it looks as if you might be onto something there. They don't currently call themselves communist and although their model very closely resembles communism, the term has been applied from external sources.

Edit: I missed the part where it says that they where at one point occupied by the Soviet Union so yes, they where indeed communist then.
