I just read this on tumblr, which I realize makes it pretty unlikely, but I am curious to know if it's true.
I posted once, to argue against the top post in the thread, which had a lot of wrong and un-sourced information posted. (I guess it was removed due to the parent post being deleted, hopefully I didn't break any rules.)
If the vikings did give cats as wedding presents, no source has survived to tell about it. So while we know a fair bit about viking weddings and gifts, cats were, from what we can tell, not a gift given at viking weddings. The evidence we have does not support the claim. There are no contemporary sources supporting the idea, and I've never seen this claim anywhere in academic works about the vikings.
This paper, Freyja’s Cats: Perspectives on Recent Viking Age Finds in !egjandadalur North Iceland is the most in-depth discussion about cats in viking culture that I've come across. No mention of cats as wedding presents there, but a lot of very interesting feline viking information!
This is sort of related! I was watching the Nature of Things last night with David Suzuki and the program stated that orange cats were most popular with Vikings/Norse peoples- and that the orange colouring in cats is still most prevalent in these regions. Is this true? Can anyone shed more light on this? Is there a reason they may have favoured orange cats?
