suppose you asked an educated English aristocrat in 1878, what they thought and/or wanted to happen to India and it's people in the future (like centuries in the future). what do you think they would say?

It might be better to reask this question without such specifics. Such as "What were the long term goals for the British vis a vis India by the late 19th century?"

They would say India should be "civilized" which in practice means "christian-ized". Depending on who you asked they might genuinely want this, or they might really just want to continue using the Indians as quasi-slave labor and are using "they're not Christian" as justification. Essentially nobody would suggest respecting Indian culture or religion.

Generally colonialism of that sort was not based around scientific racism directly so much as it was on ideas of civilization where Christianity (and more specifically Protestantism) is the highest form of civilization and superior to all others, giving Christians perogative and authority to govern and mold inferior cultures. Scientific racism was a thing, but generally even then it was unpalatable and there was a major component of the civilization theory stuff
