This old bill says that one dollar in silver is payable from the US treasury to the bearer on demand. Was it actually possible to redeem them for silver? If so, how did people go about doing that?

That is what is known as a silver certificate, if you brought that into a federal reserve bank or branch you could chose to redeem it in silver bullion, silver granules or U.S. silver dollars coins.

In 1964 the Secretary of the Treausry annouced they would stop redeming the notes in 1968. So you could not bring them this note today and demand silver
