The first "selfie" recorded was a daguerreotype taken by Robert Cornelius of himself in 1839. This was during the early days of photography. The first camera photo that survives was taken just 12 years earlier in 1827. Other early photographs of people were taken by a person other than the subject and would not qualify as a "selfie".
