I keep thinking back to a documentary on WW1 I'd watched that described how by 1919, King George V became the first British Monarch to become more of a symbol of the British nation as opposed to having any real power. Can anyone give me a timeline as to the declination of Monarchial power?
Note: I understand it begins with the Magna carta, perhaps it might be easier if I set the timeline to begin around 1700 (the beginning of Great Britain as opposed to just England)
Here are some dates from the Wikipedia article on the British constitution:
1708: The last time a monarch vetoed legislation passed by Parliament (Queen Anne withheld assent from the Scottish Militia Bill).
1834: The last time a monarch dismissed a prime minister who had not suffered a defeat on a motion of confidence in the House of Commons (William IV dismissed the Government of Lord Melbourne).
1892: The last time a monarch refused to appoint a minister nominated by the Prime Minister (Victoria refused to appoint Henry Labouchère as recommended by Gladstone).
