Judah P. Benjamin strikes me as one of the most obvious, though I suppose he's linked more with his activities for the Confederate States. Served as Senator for Louisiana from the early 1850s to secession by the South. Before that he was a lawyer in New Orleans and made a fair bit of money from it.
