american paratrooper arms and equipment in ww2?

by thekyhep

I'm watching band of brothers and I'm curious about what kind of equipment and/or weapons they carried. What determined who carried whatever weapon?

There was a comparison of soldier's inventories here http://thomatkinson.com/

Not sure of the historical accuracy of all of those, but would be curious to know that also.

Take a look here: http://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-articles/gear-gadgets-weaponry-d-day-paratrooper.html

One thing I didn't see mentioned there is the infamous leg bag. IIRC it was a British idea to put some of the trooper's kit (often including their weapon) in a bag and attach to the paratrooper's leg. The idea was that the bag could be lowered by rope and would hit the ground first, the idea being that it would reduce the weight on the trooper himself, hopefully leading to a lighter landing.

Many paratroopers that jumped on D-Day were less than impressed with the bag. Many found the bag became unattached shortly after jumping. There are a few theories about this - some believe troopers overloaded the bags, others point to the speed of the aircraft they jump on being too high and the shock of the parachute opening causing the bags to trip or the rope to break. I have also read that the bag was not rigged as the British had intended. I think its pretty much "take your pick" on the explanation why they failed.

This left the trooper in the midst of the biggest invasion ever held with no weapon, no wonder they weren't impressed!

Nevertheless the US Army thought the idea was a good one and further refined the concept for the Market Garden drops and again for Operation Varsity in 1945.

I found this picture of the leg bag in operation: http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/898/legbagqn2.jpg

This is apparently a picture of troops preparing for Operation Market Garden: http://atterburybakalarairmuseum.org/CG4A_WWII_paratroopers_pre_invasion_25.jpg from here: http://atterburybakalarairmuseum.org/gliders_eto.htm
