I am asking for a friend who has decided to take up historical reenactments. I am a wondering if there is historical evidence of any use of pipes for smoking by 10th century Vikings. Please excuse any off terminology I am here to learn.
None whatsoever; we have 0 archaeological evidence for smoking of any sort in the 10th century in Norway, nor is there any textual evidence. At best, he might be able to swing throwing herbs onto a fire in a recreation of Sami or Lappish rituals, or seiðr, but that's about it (and the seiðr thing would bring its own connotations regarding gender and sexuality with it, so he should be prepared to deal with that too.)
