Would love to match the view today, but can only see rubble, a sign saying 'no entry' and one with an arrow to 'Caen' and some words we can't make out. The road is cobbled and there are many damaged buildings, so middle of a town? Any ideas welcome! Have a look at the pic here http://www.normandythenandnow.com/to-caen-can-you-help-us-identify-this-1944-location/ Thank you.
What's on the larger sign is DÉVIATION, French for "detour", which suggests that the road to the left used to be the route to Caen but is now unusable. As for what's on the smaller sign under "NO ENTRY", it might be the French words SENS INTERDIT, or "One Way Street".
EDIT: Corrected "Dead End" to "One Way Street". Brain has already left the office for the day.
