The name of the town? village? neighborhood? was called "Mavro Xali" in Greek which means black carpet. In Turkish I think that comes out to mean "Siyah Halı" or perhaps "Kara Hali". Does anyone know where that is?
From the individuals that lived there before 1923 most just said they were from Constantinople, Anatolia or Ionia. Its not specific enough though to find where mavro xali is exactly.
What time period are you looking at?
If you have any idea idea of the ancient name I suggest going to Pleiades.stoa.org and looking up variations. Before I did any research I thought of Mavro Island Turkey, which is near modern Istanbul and in between it and area of what was once Nicomedia. Here's a link to the location

Simply searching for Siyah Hali yields this:
This is encouraging as the two are very close to each other. If you know any older or alternative names I'd be happy to try and locate it for you in something like Ptolemy's Geography.
