How did women deal with "that time of the month" when tampons and other hygienic technologies weren't around?

by tiny_buttonss

I've heard before that some more primitive communities used to shun women during their menstrual cycles, believing they were soiled, dirty, unclean, or even evil during their time of the month. But this couldn't also be the case in Victorian England (as an example). What did the Queen do when she had her period, or the Pilgrims, or the Egyptians? Was it different for each culture, or was it basically just sadly messy? (A rather broad question, but I've been very curious about it)
