Went out for drinks tonight and as I was gazing at the advert posted over the urinals I got to wondering this.

For example were adverts placed in the public toilets in Rome? Did they have designated locations (essentially billboards), or wasn't it even regulated at all? I'm just really curious about how advertizing in its current form came to be and how far back it goes.
