Did we (America) arm Sadam Hussein?

by maahtsilk

I have heard people claim that the United States armed Sadam Hussein. I don't know much about Iraq but I vaguely remember that the Iraqi army used Soviet equipment. Can anybody clarify this?

edit: not sure why I'm getting downvoted for this. It's an honest question that I've been curious about.

I'll answer both the questions you asked, but first the main question.

Yes, the United States did assist Iraq both directly and indirectly during the Iran-Iraq War. In 1986, the Washington Post revealed in a groundbreaking series of stories that the Reagan Administration had been supplying intelligence information directly to Iraq as early as 1984.

Starting in 1982, the United States began indirectly aiding Iraq militarily. Private American arms dealers were not stopped as they bought millions of dollars of Soviet weaponry in Eastern Europe and sold it to Iraq. One of the biggest arms dealers was Sarkis Soghanalian, who had close ties to the CIA.

In addition, several Middle Eastern countries supplied arms to Iraq directly, and the United States had no qualms about making good those transfers, even though it knew exactly why its allies in the Middle East suddenly needed more weapons.

Now, as to your question about downvotes, it's because your question is poorly written. You use two false equivalencies. You use the term "we" for the United States and "Saddam Hussein" in place of Iraq. You also misspell Hussein's name. The misspelling combined with the form of your question makes it appear to be a leading question -- you have your answer, and you just want support for your preconceived notion.

Note this: I'm not saying that's the case. I don't know you and I don't know your mind. I only know the words you've written, and I've seen other questions framed in a similar manner here.

People don't like being linked to dictators, and Reddit has a fetish for propriety, especially when it comes to spelling. All of those factors are working against you.

I don't know about conventional weapons, but the US government did sell biological warfare samples, such as Anthrax and the Botulism bacillus, to Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war.

Naturally, these were provided by the Centre for Disease Control and the official story would have been that this was for studying how to protect Iraq from biological warfare, but the samples could also be used to create biological warfare munitions. The USA did know that Iraq had an ongoing biological warfare program at the time, and they did support Iraq at the time.
